Acting secretary-general of the party Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir came up with the demand at a human-chain programme in front of the National press Club on Sunday.
"The government has failed to reduce the prices of essentials in its two-and-a-half years' rule, though it was its election pledge. Price hike just before Ramadan has made the public life miserable," he said.
Rickshaw-van Workers Owners Coordination Council formed the human-chain protesting the price hike of essential commodities and the government move to make several city streets off-limit to slow-moving rickshaws.
About the decision, Fakhrul said, "It would have been good had the step been taken after ensuring alternative jobs for the low-income people. It (govt) has taken the step in the interest of the rich as it is not a pro-people government."
